Display and Tradeshow Graphics

If you need a vinyl banner, trade show display or special backdrop for that convention or sporting event you will want to order a one-off display graphic.

When a company has several different retail locations they will need to order multiple units of display graphics. In order to mount a consistent marketing campaign they will have their supplier produce multiple copies of the same poster, vinyl banners, banner stands, or mounted displays.

Indoor vs. Outdoor Applications
When speaking about display graphics the most important differences will be between those used for indoor applications and those used for outdoor applications. Some popular applications for indoor display graphics include conferences, trade shows, malls, and retail stores. Common outdoor display graphics applications include vinyl banners, adhesive vinyl used for cars or windows, signage, streetscape banners, and outdoor posters that will typically be printed on either vinyl or fabric.

Those products that are used outside need to be UV resistant, which requires the use of special inks that will not fade in the sunlight or when exposed to other elements. Solvent inks work best for these types of applications as they are less vulnerable to weather damage and do not fade easily when exposed to sunlight. While you will probably run into suppliers who will print the items using water based ink and then laminate the final product do not be fooled into thinking that this will give you the quality results you desire.

You will sometimes choose to use solvent based inks for your indoor applications. A great use for solvent based inks in an indoor application is a banner that will be rolled and unrolled multiple times. Solvent inks are much less likely to break down and scratch under these types of conditions. Solvent inks also works great for banners that will be hung in front of your booth during trade shows, as they are likely to have beverages spilled on them throughout the show. Solvent inks will really make your display graphic much more durable.

Artwork Considerations
You can get expert advice from your supplier as to the proper types of graphics and illustrations to use for your display graphics. Advances in digital printing have made it possible to include items such as corporate logos, photographs, maps, text, or just about anything you can create using graphic design software such as Adobe Illustrator, QuarkExpress or CorelDraw.

The resolution of your original graphics will play a big part in whether it is acceptable for use in your graphic display. For display graphics you can use images with as low a resolution as 50 ppi, which is a far cry from the 300 ppi required for offset printing jobs such as brochures and magazines. This is an important point to remember while you are shooting your original images. It is best to shoot them as large as you possibly can so you can maintain the highest resolution when they are blown up for your popup display, banners, or roadside signs.

It is best to work with a display graphics supplier who speaks your language instead of giving you a bunch of technical lingo you can’t understand. It is relatively simple to create display graphics with just a little experience in working with images and graphic design. You should pick one or two elements to focus on and keep your display simple. It is possible to find a quality digital graphics supplier who is willing to make minor improvements to your images for no additional charge.
